Nikolai Novichkov. A gift to Zhenya

About the exhibition

Nikolai Novichkov is an architect by training and a graphic artist by vocation. A passion that had emerged, according to the artist, to entertain himself and his friends, soon after turned into a professional career. Nikolai Novichkov discovers a vast array of means of expression in graphics, which was lacking in the "planovaya" architecture of the 1980s.

Nikolai seeks his own path in art, expressing himself in various forms and genres. A wide variety of topics is being caught in the artist's field of view, inspiring him to create sharp, satirical compositions or fantastic sketches of "animal life", or even dragging him into the world of geometric abstractions. Nikolai's favorite technique is the inclusion of texts in visual space.

A persistent feature of Nikolai Novichkov's creativity is a vividly tangible emotional charge of his works. This is best observed in his two series called "Our" and "Characters". Its main character "Muzhicjok-nedotykomka" has a surprisingly strong correlation with the images of "Mitki' and Ural folklore heroes. This small, self-contained individual is depicted by the artist with a bit of irony. However, we can see that the author is somehow envious of his simple, soulful and, at the same time, poetic life. So he is willingly sharing his delight about this life with the audience.
